Jonah Hurney and Hawaii Prep didn’t dwell long on its missed opportunity Monday in a loss at Konawaena.

Jonah Hurney and Hawaii Prep didn’t dwell long on its missed opportunity Monday in a loss at Konawaena.

In the rematch Wednesday in Waimea, Hurney fired a one-hitter as Ka Makani beat the Wildcats 5-0 in a BIIF Division II baseball game.

Hurney, a sophomore, struck out six and worked around four walks. He and Kana’i Gaughen each finished with two hits.

“This was definitely a confidence-booster for us, and Jonah was the big reason why,” Ka Makani coach Jordan Hayslip said.

On Monday, Ka Makani (3-5) failed to take advantage of Konawaena eight errors in a 7-6 loss, but Hurney made his team forget all about that misstep.

Hurney pitched last season for an HPA team that relied on three seniors

“We knew (Jonah) was going to be good for us,” Hayslip said.

Konawaena (4-2) was shut out for the second time in three games.

Hurney fired 14 first-pitch strikes to keep the Wildcats off-balance.

Their lone hit was A.J. Allred’s hard single up the middle with two outs in the fourth inning. Allred was promptly erased when he was thrown out trying to steal.

Tristan DeAguiar took the loss for Konawaena, yielding five runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

“It was big that we got up early,” Hayslip said.

Hurney not only thrived by getting ahead in the count, but he also got Ka Makani off to good start at the plate, tripling to lead off the first inning and scoring on Finn Richmond’s groundout. Gaughen and Blake Winston followed with run-scoring doubles to give HPA a 3-0 lead.

In the third, Richmond doubled and scored on Gaughen’s single, and Ka Makani manufactured a run in the fourth, loading the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks. Hurney’s groundout plated the fifth run.

Hilo at Kamehameha: The game was called because rain and rescheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.

The contest’s second rain delay occurred as Hilo was taking the field in the bottom of the fifth ahead 2-0 with ace Joey Jarneski working on a two-hitter.

The coaches were originally told the game would resume from that juncture Friday, but according to baseball coordinator Tom Correa, Friday’s contest will start from scratch.

Kealakehe at Honokaa and Pahoa at Keaau were also postponed by rain and rescheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday.
